CANUTEC

CARGO AGENTS

IATA Cargo Agents are licensed “agents” for IATA airlines, selling and providing service on behalf of the IATA carriers—Many forwarders are IATA agents—Nearly all IATA agents are also forwarders—IATA Agents can sign and issue airline airway bills on behalf of the airlines, forwarders cannot.

CERTIFICATION

Hazmat Certification, DG Certification, DG Certified, Hazmat Certified etc. all refer to the concept that someone, some entity is conferring approval on an individual or company that they are authorized to ship hazmat in commerce. The US DOT does not certify individuals, but has responsibility for some regulations.

DANGEROUS GOODS

Articles or substances which are capable of posing a significant risk to health, safety or property when transported by air and which are classified according to the U.S. DOT and IATA ICAO List of Dangerous Goods.

DANGEROUS GOODS ACCIDENT

An occurrence associated with and related to the transport of dangerous goods which results in fatal or serious injury to a person or major property damage.

DANGEROUS GOODS INCIDENT

An occurrence other than a dangerous goods accident associated with and related to the transport of dangerous goods which results in injury to a person, property damage, fire, breakage, spillage, leakage of fluid or radiation or other evidence that the integrity of the packaging has not been maintained.

The intervention of first responders (fire, police, ambulance) following an accident or incident involving dangerous goods.

EXCEPTION

A provision in these regulations which excludes a specific item of dangerous goods from the requirements normally applicable to that item.

EXEMPTION

Authorization issued by appropriate authorities concerned providing relief from the provisions of these Regulations.

FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration oversees air transportation in the United States

FLASH POINT

The lowest temperature at which flammable vapor is given off a liquid in a test vessel in sufficient concentration to be ignited in air when exposed momentarily to a source of ignition. This does not mean the temperature at which a liquid ignites spontaneously.

INCOMPATIBLE

Describing dangerous goods which, if mixed, would be liable to cause a dangerous evolution of heat or gas or produce a corrosive substance. Substances that must not be loaded or packed in a position where they could come into contact with one another.

NET QUANTITY

The mass or volume of the dangerous goods contained in a package excluding the mass or volume of any packaging material (except in the case of explosive articles and matches where the net mass is the mass of the finished article excluding packagings).

OPERATOR

A person, organization or enterprise engaged in or offering to engage in a transportation operation. (i.e. an airline)

OVERPACK

An enclosure used by a single shipper to contain one or more packages and to form one handling unit for convenience of handling and stowage. (i.e. a warehouse pallet or an "E" container)

PACKAGE

Complete product of the packaging operation consisting of the packaging and contents prepared for transportation.

PACKAGING

Receptacles and other components necessary for the receptacle to perform it's containment function. A critical element for secure and safe transportation of dangerous goods. Kel-Ex can determine which packaging you need and provide you with the appropriate UN packaging for your shipment.

PACKING

The art or operation by which articles or substances are enveloped in wrappings and or enclosed in packagings or otherwise secured.

PACKING GROUP

An indication of the relative degree of danger presented by various articles and substances within a class or division.

PLACARD

Sign displayed to show specific class of hazardous materials being transported.

PROPER SHIPPING NAME

The name to be used to describe a particular article or substance in all shipping documents and notification and, where appropriate, on packagings.

SORBENT

Materials designed for control of spills though absorbent properties. Used as liners in packages, or in emergency response situations. See Sorbent items in our catalogue.

TRAINING

Here, training always refers to authorized education leading to certification by the appropriate authority
